Jonathan Cory-Wright finished his degree at the Bartlet School of Arquitecture in 2004. After practicing in an arquitecture office in London he moved to Spain, where he discovered the spanish cane - Arundo Donax - and through inicial experimentation with living 'canya' he soon realized its potential as a sustainable and abundant building material. So, in two years of investigation, Jonathan developed techniques of building resistant structures of great strenght and harmony. The techiches developed are based on several principles and methods, acording to 'canya' material properties - such as age, calibre, flexibility, etc. - that go into making specifically designed modules of various length and diameter that connect together to create integral networks of arches, resulting in organic structural forms. The first professional works of CanyaViva include a porch of 250m2 for the 'Citizen's Initiative Pavillion' at the Expo Zaragoza 2008 in Spain, and the main stage and the healing area of the Sacred Fire arena of Boom Festival 2008. Since then Jonathan has been working independently, giving courses in' Design and Construction with Canya' around Spain and Portugal, and continues to build for comunities and other festivals. |
