In parallel with our construction and training programs, we are continually investigating cane and bamboo as structural materials, as well as their use in combination with other natural materials such as clay and straw, and lime with hemp fibre. By studying the behaviour of cane and bamboo structures at their limits, we are able to guarantee the security and durability of our constructions.

We are currently working along three main lines of investigation:

a) “Cane as a structural material”, being developed and carried out at the University of Barcelona (UPC), by the architectural students association, ESFA, and coordinated by Architect Oriol Palau. (www.investigaciocanyera.blogspot.com)

b) “Parametric design of sustainable structures”, part of the program ORGAN, developed by the association SEED. (www.studioseed.net)

c) “Bamboo multi-storey housing”, being carried out in India with the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency,  constructing and testing prototypes of two or more storeys, and developing methods of curving bamboo using the technique of CanyaViva in combination with heat bending ad other bamboo construction techniques and joinery.
